Today, let’s talk carrier oils. I’ve mentioned them here and there though out this series but today I want to touch on why they are an important part of using essential oils.
It’s important to use carrier oils so that they extend the life of your essential oils. Not only will it make a bottle last longer, but it will also allow the essential oil to sit on your skin a bit longer and be absorbed by your skin a little easier. Carrier oils also make it easier to spread EOs around a little easier.
The most convenient way to use carrier oils that I’ve found is making roller ball containers, (like allergy and happy,) by putting single oils or mixes in a roller container, and add a carrier oil to double the volume in the container. That provides a 1:1 ratio for carrier oil to essential oil. That way you always have diluted oils ready to go! *BONUS TIP* Each bottle of Young Living Essential Oil has a label that explains the best dilution ratio for that particular oil. Most oils operate best with a 1:1 ratio but there are some oils like Peppermint that are much “hotter” oils and are best when used more heavily diluted.
Some popular carrier oil options include olive oil, grape seed oil, jojoba oil, and coconut oil (both solid and fractionated). The ones I use most are sunflower seed oil and grape seed oil. They are odorless and flavorless. Just make sure whatever you choose is high quality cooking oil. (Oils from the beauty section of most grocery stores have added synthetics. They are also more expensive. Choose cooking oils every time.)
Something else to remember about carrier oils are how they affect your skin. Most of the common oils have been given a rating to help us choose what we’d like to use. This graphic below lists out some of the common oils and their comedogenic ratings. I choose sunflower seed oil because of its low rating. I can count on it to not clog my pores.
DISCLAIMER: The things I share with you are not intended to diagnose, treat, or cure any illness or be a substitute for any medicine. It is true that I have found less need for OTC medicines, but you have to make choices that are right for your family. Another choice I’ve made is to exclusively use Young Living Essential Oils. I believe they are 100% pure without any synthetic additives. That’s huge to me! I have read a lot of material on different essential oil companies and Young Living is what I have chosen. If you choose to use essential oils, I encourage you to do some research and choose the brand that you believe in.
